One of the biggest expenses you will have when planning your wedding is the venue, with catering being second. If you’re putting out a ton of money to rent a space for your reception, you need to make sure you’re getting your money’s worth. That’s why we wanted to share with you some of our favorite tips for choosing the best wedding venue for your upstate New York wedding.

OUR TOP 5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE BEST WEDDING VENUE

Here’s our advice on how to choose the best wedding venue for your special day.

1. THINK ABOUT YOUR GUEST LIST.

When choosing the best wedding venue, it’s not enough to choose one simply based on looks or the vibe you get while there. You also have to think about logistics. How many people will be attending your reception? Will your ideal venue fit all of your guests? Conversely, if you’re planning a small wedding, is your favorite venue too big? If so, consider downsizing to a more appropriate-sized venue. This is one area where you have the opportunity to save some money.

2. CHECK THE VENUE OUT AT THE SAME TIME THAT YOUR WEDDING IS SCHEDULED.

If your wedding is going to be in the evening, don’t visit the venue in the morning. You need to check the venue out at the same time of day that your wedding and reception will be held. This will give you some important information. You may find that there’s a cold draft when the evening winds pick up or that there are a lot of people nearby that could disturb your event.

3. ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS AND DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Before you visit the venue, do your research. Find out if there are any restrictions (especially when it comes to wedding catering) that would put a damper on your reception plans. While you’re doing your research, make a list of all the questions that pop into your head. If you don’t, we can guarantee you’ll probably forget to ask something. It happens to us all the time! When you tour the facility, ask your guide all of the questions on your list. That’s what they’re there for – to help you out. So don’t be afraid to ask.

It might be a good idea to take your wedding planner along with you too. They’ve been in this situation many times before. They look at things differently and will have a list of their own questions to ask that you might not have thought of yet.

4. DOUBLE-CHECK THE WEDDING CATERING RESTRICTIONS.

Some venues have very strict rules about wedding catering. For instance, some only allow an in-house caterer to provide food for events held there. There are venues that will allow you to do what you want when it comes to wedding catering…but at an additional cost. Whether you’re willing to pay the extra cost or not is up to you, just make sure you get that info right away so you can budget around it.

5. WILL THE VENUE FIT YOUR WEDDING STYLE AND THEME?

Some venues are standard enough to fit just about any wedding style. However, you may not want to hold your country-themed wedding in a restored industrial warehouse, or your modern-chic wedding in a refurbished barn. Or, you might. Again, it’s your choice, just make sure to give it some thought before you fall in love with a venue and sign on the dotted line.
